Although I called him a snob the word is misleading. It would be truer to describe him as a romantic. And although he was happy in my service he should really have been head of a large household in a stately home. He always reminded me of the butler in Punch, opening the door to a scruffy little agitator who announced that the revolution had arrived. "The revolution?" repeated the butler haughtily. "Kindly deliver it at the servant's entrance."
